Government agencies like the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) require food, beverage, and pharmaceutical processing companies to incorporate sanitation and environmental controls into their workflows. When the manufacturing of a product calls for aseptic measures, all the process records are audited for compliance with regulations before releasing the product to the market. As such, it is crucial that all sanitation activities are rigorously followed every day.
Importance of Stainless Steel Steam Generators
Steam is widely used as a sterilization agent—but not all steam is equally pure. Steam of different purity levels is required for different applications. There are common categories for industrial steam:
- Clean steam. The feed water for clean steam must not be treated with water treatment chemicals. Clean steam is used for humidification and sterilization.
- Sterilization steam. DIN 58950-7 (the standard for steam sterilizers for pharmaceutical products) calls for another category of steam for use in sterilizing parenteral drugs in closed containers. The high limit of the conductivity of this steam is 10µm/cm, which is above the limit for WFI. This steam is also utilized in the sterilization of goods that are not in direct contact with the pharmaceutical product.
Stainless steel steam generators are ideal for producing clean steam and sterilization steam.

Electro-Steam manufactures clean steam generators for use by the pharmaceutical industry. These generators are also suitable for use by biotechnical labs and factories. They are widely used for the humidification, heating, and sterilization of the equipment, products, and utensils used by these industries.
The LG series models are benchtop, low-pressure units, while the LB units are more powerful than LG. Electro-Steam can also fabricate custom units for unique application specifications. All of the above units are highly efficient and are fabricated with high quality 316L stainless steel on all wetted surfaces.
While some units can provide more than 100 psi, most of them provide pressures from 0–100 psi. Most of these steam generators are also available as indirect steam to clean steam models in facilities that already have utility steam. The power ratings for these models range from 30kW to 240kW.
Standalone models come in stainless steel cabinets and integral models are available with stainless steel electrical enclosures.

Indirect Steam
Indirect clean steam generators use existing “house steam” energy to convert purified water into clean steam. These generators offer the same functionality and ease of use as all-electric steam generators, but save energy by using steam that is already produced in a facility.
Applications
Clean steam is a sterile, safe steam that can be used to sterilize and clean items in a cleanroom or other pharmaceutical or medical setting with strict cleanliness criteria.
Sterilization and Autoclaves
An autoclave is a type of machinery that utilizes steam to sanitize equipment and tools used in medical, scientific, and various other fields. Ideally, it is preferred to supply steam to the autoclave using a stand-alone or built-in steam generator, which is specifically built to provide steam for autoclave sterilization.
Pharmaceutical Clean Steam
Steam sterilization is a critical process in medical and pharmaceutical settings. Clean steam can be used to sterilize equipment within a controlled environment. The steam sterilization process is commonly used in the following applications:
- Biopharmaceutical manufacturing: in these settings, bacteria, animal cells, or yeasts are grown to produce consistent biopharmaceutical components. A sterile, controlled environment is crucial.
- Manufacturing sterile solutions, such as injectable and parenteral solutions, ophthalmic products, and more.
